The Amazon Kindle
I love my Amazon Kindle e-book reader. For my own children, it has been a way for us to get free or very inexpensive books which we would not have bought for them at the price of a regular book. For my students at school, it has been a great motivator because they think it is "very cool" to read from such a high tech gadget. It is a little expensive to purchase ($299.00), but once you own the device you can get thousands and thousands of free books, and even the newest titles are only $10.00.
The Kindle can go on the Internet (wirelessly from anywhere with a cell phone signal) and check email or get Mapquest directions or instantly look up the definition of any word in a book you are reading (there is no charge for this internet access). If that is not surprising enough, the Kindle can also be used as an mp3 player to listen to music, or you can listen to an audio book.
I have the first generation of the Kindle. There have been two other realeases since I bought mine. My Kindle uses a 2GB SD card to hold about 2,000 books, and new Kindles have the same memory built-in . The new Kindles also can read aloud any book or document that is saved in the Kindle (for a few cents you can upload your own documents to your Kindle). I have not heard the voice, so I can't vouch for its quality. Kindles use very little power, so one re-charge of the battery lasts me for a week.
I am never bored because I always have a couple thousand books with me, plus my subscriptions to several newspapers and magazines, all in the Kindle in my bookbag. I keep the complete works of Shakespeare with me, so when we recently went to an outdoor play and couldn't hear every line, it was no problem because I pulled out the Kindle and let my family read along with the performance.
